STUSU briefs Feb. 2

    Award ceremony planned

    St. Thomas University Students’ Union President Fernanda Damiani met with university administrators to co-ordinate an academic award ceremony to take place a day before convocation. She said if it works out, this event will happen every year to give out awards to students who have high academic standing, honours and other achievements.

    Budget

    The STUSU budget still has not been finalized. Damiani said it will come out next week.

    Student communications

    Damiani also met with Kim Fenwick, vice-president academic and research, about how senate can be better connected to students and have better communication with them.

    Funds approved

    The finance committee has approved $288 to the Chinese Association for a Chinese New Year party.

    New committee

    Campus Trust has struck a new student-committee to promote Campus Trust to other schools in order to get new members.

    Mental health awareness week

    The dance workshop has been rescheduled from Feb. 14 to Feb. 16 at 6:30 p.m. On Feb. 15 and 16, STUSU will be hosting student consultation with counselling services to talk about what students want he peer-support centre to look like and what resources they’re looking to get out of it. The centre will launch in September 2017.

    Community food smart

    This is the first week the Food Smart bags will be packed on campus. Brianna Matchett, vice-president student life, said the packing will take place in Marshall D’Avery Hall on Feb. 9. She said volunteers are needed Feb. 9 from 10 a.m. to noon to help pack the bags.

    Matchett also said they have had a record number of bags this month. They had 43 orders. She said 23 orders are the regular bag and 20 are the newly-offered crunchy bags.
