Tommie’s lead Huskies dog sled to victory

Saint Mary’s Huskie’s bark was louder than their bite as the St. Thomas University women’s hockey team beat them 3-2 at the Grant Harvey Centre Jan. 9.

Huskies dominated the majority of the first period keeping the puck in STU goal zone.

STU started off rough with a 2:00 minute elbowing penalty with 3:47 into the period.

STU’s Becky Conner tried to recover with a breakaway but was robbed by Huskies Sarah Douglas.

The puck returned to STU goal-zone but was refracted back down the ice. STU’s Stephanie Ford and Huskies Carly Gray sprinted down the ice for the puck but it found its way in Huskies possession.

Huskies Laura Polak passed to Hannah Askin who attempted a slap shot on Tommie’s goalie Abby Clarke but was unsuccessful.

The puck rebounded and ended up in Askin’s stick who got another shot off with no success.

STU’s Lauren Henman defended her goal zone and skated the puck into SMU territory against two Huskies but wasn’t able to land a solid shot on goal.

Samantha Squires was able to get her stick on the puck and land a shot on goal but was blocked off the pads of Huskie’s goalie Rebecca Weagle.

Polak gained possession and passed to Mary Worndi for the one-timer but was saved by Clarke.

STU’s defence Caley Steinert responded with a one-timer pass to forward Myfanwy Thomson but was saved by Clark.

In the last minute of play Caley Steinert attempted a slap shot from behind the blue line but the puck went wide.

The period ended 0-0 with two shots on goal for STU and nine for SMU.

The Tommie’s came out strong in the second period looking to avenge the first period’s domination by SMU.

STU’s Emily Oleksuk faced off with SMU’s Caitlyn Manning during puck drop ending in Huskies possession.

Tommie’s Teah Anderson took control of the puck, passed it to Kenya Marcelline who shot on goal but was saved by Clark’s pads.

Henman showed ample determination after she shot on goal in a mid-air dive, missed, got up, shot again, but the puck was held by Clark.

The Tommies continued to keep the puck in Huskie territory throughout most of the period.

With 9:50 left in the period STU got a five-on-four power play after Nicole Blanche received 2:00 for slashing.

STU’s Eliza Snider took advantage with repeated slap shots from the blue line setting up a solid shot on goal by Thomson.

After numerous shots on goal by the Tommies, Anderson sunk a goal with an assist by Thomas with 8:15 left in the second period bringing the score 1-0.

The Tommies brought their shots on goal up to 11 compared to the Huskies 13 showing improvement.

Tommies scored less than two minutes later with 7:41 left by Eliza Snider with an assist by Henman.

The second period ended with the Huskies owning ten extra shots on goal at 23-13 with the score 2-0 Tommies.

The Huskies responded in the third period with two goals showing their want for redemption.

Huskies Breanna Lanceleve landed a solid goal for SMU with an assist by Nicole Blanche bringing the score 3-2 for STU.

SMU continued to gain domination of the game with no luck. With 2:30 left in the game both teams turned the rink into a gladiator arena where the Tommies pushed to dictate the game while the Huskies struggled for dominance.

The game ended 3-2 for STU with 28-23 shots on goal for SMU.
