The Mount Allison University Mounties went unbeaten in exhibition men’s basketball play to win the 2016 Ken Gould Invitational Tournament on the weekend at the Lady Beaverbrook Gym in Fredericton.
On the women’s side, the St. Thomas University Tommies, University of Maine at Fort Kent Bengals and Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics all went 2-1 in pre-season hoops action, while the Mount Allison University Mounties finished 0-3 on the tournament.
The tournament ended with an overtime thriller Sunday evening as the Tommies men edged the University of New Brunswick Saint John Seawolves 83-82 in extra time to finish second in the male division with a 2-1 record.
STU also fell 85-61 to MtA on Saturday after downing the Dalhousie Agricultural College Rams 66-61 Friday night.
In other men’s action, MtA tripped the Rams 80-72, UNBSJ beat Dal AC 80-78 and the Mounties downed the Seawolves 80-59.
In women’s basketball play, STU won 68-62 over MtA on Sunday after beating the Bengals 77-61 Saturday and losing 66-61 to MSVU on Friday.
As well, UMFK tripped MSVU 71-62, the Mystics defeated the Mounties 74-58 and UMFK won 79-72 over MtA.
Tournament all-stars for the Tommies were Mitch Claybourn and Dylan Gallant on the men’s side. The STU all-stars on the women’s squad were Jayme Hunt and Carissa McTague.
The annual tournament honours Ken Gould, who led the Tommies men’s squad to three consecutive New Brunswick College Basketball Conference Championship titles from 1963 to 1965.
Gould appears on the STU Sports Wall of Fame twice. He was inducted as an individual in 2011 and as a member of the 1962 to 1965 basketball teams the following year.
STU’s regular season begins Saturday, Oct. 29, when the Tommies travel to Sackville to face MtA. The women’s game gets underway at 2 p.m., while the men’s contest goes at 4 p.m.
Andrews named Athlete of the Month
Bailey Andrews of the Tommies women’s rugby team was named the STU Coastal Graphics Athlete of the Month for September 2016.
A press release from the STU athletics department said Andrews, a second-year scrumhalf, has stepped up as a leader for the Tommies this year.
The release said Andrews’ smart offensive choices and key defensive tackles have been key to the team’s success.
Andrews was named the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association women’s rugby rookie of the year for 2015. She leads the Tommies (3-2) with 27 points scored in four games played.
Baker named Athlete of the Week
The Tommies Coors Light Athlete of the Week for Oct. 11 was first-year centre Becca Baker of the STU women’s rugby squad.
Baker recorded 25 points after five times across the try line and had strong runs to split the defense and create scoring chances on Monday, Oct. 10 in a Thanksgiving match against the Dal AC Rams at Scotiabank Park South.
