St. Thomas University students have elected Mark Livingstone as the new Students’ Union president, beating incumbent Ella Henry by only 23 votes.

Because the race was so close, a recount was completed before the vote was announced.

The Cellar was packed as chief returning officer Sarah Bulman read the results just after 11 p.m.

Mary-Dan Johnston, who ran unopposed, was re-elected as vice-president administration.

Craig Mazerolle defeated Justin Marshall by over 100 votes to be re-elected vice-president education.

And Alex Vietinghoff defeated Randy Kaye and David Morse to become the new vice-president student life.

After re-working the numbers, Bulman found that only 23.6 percent of STU students voted this election. This is almost ten percent less than what she initially announced in her email to students this morning. Last spring’s voter turnout was 22.9 percent, which was considered high at the time.

A full report of those elected will be online tomorrow.

The chief returning officer will present a full election report within the next three weeks.
