George Canyon made a stop at the Fredericton Playhouse on Feb. 17 for his Our Country tour, as part of his promotion for his autobiography My Country.
Originally from New Glasgow, N.S., Canyon has professionally performed country music since the 1990s and has won many awards, including a Juno Award for Best Country Recording of the Year.
In his ongoing national tour, he is visiting cities all over Canada, with multiple locations close to his home in the Maritimes.
“My mom, my uncles and aunts are still there. I’ll get to see them. Mostly, I’m happy because we haven’t been able to tour in three years,” said Canyon in an interview with CityNews Halifax.
Tim Yerxa, executive director of the Fredericton Playhouse, said he worked with Canyon’s regional promoter to put on the concert in Fredericton.
The Playhouse sold around 620 tickets, which he said is a great turnout considering there was a snowstorm that day.
“People were really concerned about the weather … but their team worked with our team to get everything in place,” said Yerxa.
“Everyone was pleased and George had performed here before. I think he was pleased to be back in Fredericton.”
He also said it is important to have bigger artists perform at the Playhouse to promote a community feeling.
“It brings out a lot of people who don’t come to the Playhouse very often because they’re a fan of those artists or that kind of music,” said Yerxa.
After visiting Fredericton, Canyon went to his hometown in Pictou County, N.S.
The tour will end in Nanaimo, B.C., on March 21.
