    STUSU donates to Philippines relief

The first charity STUSU donates to this year is going to the Red Cross for relief in the Philippines.

On Nov. 8, a typhoon hit the country leaving thousands dead or unaccounted for.

The STUSU will be taking $300 from their $3,000 charitable assistance fund for Red Cross relief. This number will be matched by the government of Canada.

The motion was brought forward by Woody Brown with a request of $200 donated. Megan Aiken moved to raise it to $300, which is 10 per cent of the fund.

The STUSU usually donates to charities in the region, but Luke Robinson, VP education, said it was reasonable to donate to this cause if the STUSU found it necessary.

    Advocacy policy passes

The STUSU advocacy policy for this academic year passed unanimously at council on Thursday.

The policy includes accessibility and mental health on campus, the cost of education and the creation of a faculty code of conduct.

Robinson said this document is not a legally binding document but just states what the STUSU supports and will advocate for.

    Ad hoc committee created

An ad hoc committee was created last week at the STUSU council meeting.

Five St. Thomas students were nominated to fill positions on the committee. Natasha Glover, VP student life, is also on the committee.

Glover said this committee will collect data on students’ impressions of services and events put on by the STUSU. This is to determine what works for students and what changes need to be made.

“The goal is to, number one, address students needs and concerns, seeing if we put enough or too much into these programs and activities,” said Glover. “[And] helping to see if students are satisfied with our programs and activities.”

There are still four empty positions on the committee.
