The STU women’s soccer and rugby teams played their home openers this past weekend with very different results.
The soccer team took on UNBSJ at home on Saturday, tying 1-1. The game started slow with UNBSJ scoring 19 minutes into the first half.
The Tommies dominated after half time with many scoring opportunities. Team captain Elaine Gillis scored the tying goal early in the second half, but the team couldn’t get past UNBSJ’s goalie again for a win.
The women’s rugby team held their home opener on Sunday versus St. Francis Xavier. StFX, the country’s number one team, dominated the Tommies from early on.
StFX started strong, scoring 59 points in the first half and 29 in the second.
STU put forth a strong effort during the last few minutes of the game. The team made solid tackles and began to show promise late in the game but ultimately fell 88-0.
This is only the second season the women’s rugby team has played in the AUS.
Both teams play away games next Saturday, with women’s soccer visiting University of King’s College and women’s rugby taking on UPEI.
