Women’s hockey preview

Six new players will skate with the Lady Tommies this season at the LBR.

The team hopes to build on the success of last season, where they finished third with a 14-5-5 record, including an impressive 8-1-4 clip after Christmas.

The new players will help fill the holes up front left by forwards Ashley Duguay and Catherine Boudreau, who both finished their careers with the Tommies last year, and forward Renee Edison and defenseman Nicole Dube, who are not returning.

Katie Brewster is a forward out of Lower Sackville, NS. She spent last season at Brewster Academy, a prep school in New Hampshire.

Brewster spent considerable time last season on the team’s first line, and was one of their senior players last season.

She played with Team Atlantic in last year’s National under-18 tournament.

Courtney Fox is a defenseman from Jacksontown, NB. She is a third year player coming into this season. She spent one season with the University of Maine.

In her only season with the Black Bears, she had three points in 33 games.

Before joining the NCAA club, Fox played on Team Atlantic in the 2005 National under-18 tournament.

Kristin Wolfe is a goaltender out of Chignecto, Nova Scotia. She was named top goaltender in the New England Prep School League last year playing for Berkshire, in Massachusetts.

She was a captain of the team last year, and was awarded as Most Valuable Player.

Wolfe will compete for ice time with the returning Julia Sharun, who was lights-out as a first year goaltender last year. Mia Leander, the other netminder from last season, is not returning.

Kendra Broad comes to STU out of Petrolia, Ont. The forward spent the last two seasons with the Burlington Jr. Barracudas of the Provincial Women’s Hockey League, an Ontario junior league. Last season, she had nine goals and eight assists in 34 games.

Broad also led her high school team in scoring and was named Most Valuable Player.

Amy Kelbaugh comes to the big T from the Weyburn-Pento Gold Wings. Last season, the Springdale, SK native led her team in scoring with 25 points in 27 games. The first year center will hope to carry over her offensive numbers to the Tommies this season.

Kelbaugh played three years in the Saskatchewan midget ranks. She had 26 goals in that time.

The Tommies also added local product Amanda Burns from New Maryland, NB. The natural defenseman will likely play forward for most of the year, as the team has a surplus of blueliners. Putting on the ‘T’ jersey will seem natural for the first year player, as her father, Chris Burns, played on the men’s team from 1990-94.

Burns spent the last three years at the Kents Hill prep school in Maine.

The Tommies hit the ice on Friday, Oct. 16, when they take on the St.FX X-Women in Antigonish, and then Saturday, the 17th, in Halifax against the Dalhousie Tigers.

Their home opener is Oct. 30 against St.FX at the LBR at 7pm.
