It’s time to bring out the ice skates, skis, and curling brooms for St. Thomas University’s third annual Wellness Week.
Free events such as ice-skating, Pilates and karate classes, and cheap nights at Crabbe Mountain are available to students and faculty from Feb. 18 to Feb. 23.
On Feb. 23 there will also be a curling event at the Capital Winter Club.
Tami Hill, chair of the Wellness Committee, said the group organizes these events in order to promote health and personal wellness on campus.
“St. Thomas is conscious of the health and wellness of all members in our campus community. As such, initiatives through the Wellness Committee, athletics and other campus groups or departments are encouraged and seen as positive additions to campus life for students, staff, and faculty.”
The idea of promoting wellness at STU first began with the athletics office in 2008. Two years later, the Wellness Committee took over the project.
The Wellness Committee is “a volunteer group made up of staff and faculty members who wish to educate campus members on health and wellness issues as well as involve them in interactive events, physical fitness, etc.,” said Hill.
New events at this year’s Wellness Week include snowshoe races and educational ‘Lunch and Learns’ on mental health.
“We try and offer a variety of activities each year and really hope that everyone will enjoy what each activity has to offer,” said Hill.
STU student Karmen Magarvey is excited about the half-price ski lift tickets at Crabbe Mountain.
“Skiing is expensive and as a student this is a great opportunity to be able to go out on the lifts and have a good time with friends.”
Hill said there is sometimes low attendance to events, “…but we are extremely pleased with the turnout we have been receiving in the past years.”
