Accessibility for parent students
Alex Nguyen, president of the St. Thomas University’s Students’ Union, said STUSU has been discussing accessibility issues for students with children in meetings with Kim Fenwick, STU’s vice-president of academic and research, and University Registrar Karen Preston.
Nguyen said STU only has one bathroom on campus with a changing table, currently located in JDH’s first-floor women’s bathroom.
“We need to have such accommodations for all students to be able to be on campus and to thrive in this environment,” she said.
Mid-winter ceremony and traditional lunches
Stevie Demerchant, Indigenous representative of the St. Thomas University Students’ Union, said mid-winter celebrations will take place in early February and will include lighting a sacred fire, elder workshops, talking circles, longhouse teachings and more.
“There isn’t a final schedule a point yet for the celebration, but that’s going to be coming out on Monday,” she said.
The Wabanaki Student Centre will also host monthly traditional lunches on Wednesdays to promote Indigneous dishes.
