Tommies women’s basketball remain undefeated

Women’s bball downs Mount Allison

The St. Thomas Tommies continue to enjoy a perfect season in the ACAA women’s basketball circuit.

STU (10-0) downed Mount Allison 65-54 Sunday at the South Gym to extend its winning streak to ten games, moving the Tommies into sole possession of first place.

St. Thomas’ head coach Fred Connors said there’s still a lot of season left, and his squad isn’t getting ahead of itself as the Tommies eye an undefeated season.

“We’ve talked all year about controlling the controllers and focusing on just us,” said Connors, now in his seventh year as coach. “We went on a nice run on the defensive side, we had good ball movement and our aggression attacking the rim was really solid.”

Leading the way for STU was Ashley Bawn, who paced with 16 points, three assists and four rebounds, while Jillian Lamoreau chipped in 15 points and 12 rebounds in the the winning effort.

“I thought Ashely Bawn was really tough today, she played another great game for us,” said Connors.

The Tommies were in control most of the game, sinking seven three-pointers in the first half.

They took a 38-24 lead into half time, and were up by as much as 21 points in the third quarter.

But they saw their 20-point cushion slip away in the fourth quarter as MTA managed to close the gap to eight points.

“Our energy dropped and we lost focus,” Connors said. “I think a lot of people looked at the scoreboard thinking it was over.”

The Tommies are now on top in the ACAA, leading Mount St. Vincent University by two points in the overall standings.

The team is back in action next weekend when they travel to Halifax to face the third-place King’s Blue Devils on Saturday.
