Runner Stefen Savoy made St. Thomas University history earlier this year as the first STU track and field athlete to receive the Atlantic University Sport Track and Field Student-Athlete Community Service Award.
The award is given to student-athletes who compete in the AUS conference, keep a high grade point average and are active in their communities.
A news release from the STU athletics department said Savoy is a Dean’s List student, a residence advisor and a campus tour guide. He has also been on the STU moot court team.
As well, Savoy – a fourth-year human rights and sociology student – has served on the Atlantic Human Rights Centre board, the Terry Fox Run planning committee and the St. Thomas University Students’ Union.
He helped with the Get Out The Vote campaign for the 2015 federal election and has been involved with World Reality Education, Shinerama and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Rugby, soccer athletes recognized
Austin Comeau and Zoé de Bellefeuille were named the STU Tommies Coors Light Athletes of the Week for the week of Sept. 26 to Oct. 3.
Comeau is a fourth-year centre on the Tommies men’s rugby squad, while de Bellefeuille is a fourth-year centre back on the STU women’s soccer team.
A news release from the STU athletics department said Comeau hails from Burton, a community located southeast of Fredericton.
The release said Comeau made more than 20 tackles against the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers on Sunday, Sept. 25 on the road.
That number includes four of them within one minute of play.
Comeau also added three tries for the Tommies in the contest against UPEI, which ended in a 23-23 draw.
The release said de Bellefeuille – who hails from Ottawa – came up big for the Tommies women’s soccer team and scored both goals in STU’s 2-1 home win on Sunday, Sept. 25 against the Dalhousie Agricultural College Rams.
That performance came after the Tommies suffered a 6-0 defeat on home turf Saturday, Sept. 24 against the juggernaut Holland College Hurricanes.
