St. Thomas University Tommies men’s hockey team lost to the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus Tigers 1-0 despite the Tommies performance at the Grant Harvey Centre Nov. 14.
About 450 fans attended the Tommies game, some who may have come over from the ringette games that was held in the rink next door.
Many of the fans could be heard talking throughout the game to one another about the improvements the Tommies have shown recently, particularly in this game.
The game remained scoreless throughout the first three periods and went into a 10 minute sudden-death overtime. The extra period remained scoreless and went into a shootout.
The puck was dropped at 7:00 p.m. between Tommies center Jason Cameron and Tigers Forward Fabian Walsh.
Tommies Andrew Fritsch got the first shot on goal in the game but was blocked and reflected off the pads of the Tigers goalie.
STU gained a power play with 18:44 left in the period when DAL AC’s forward Andrew Rieder got a two minute penalty.
The Tommies tried to capitalize on the five-on-four opportunity when Mark-Andre Levesque shot the puck wide of the net and into the stick of JC Campagna who managed a slap shot that was saved by the goalie’s pads.
Levesque then landed another solid slap-shot that was rebounded off the goalie giving Shane McColgan an opportunity for a shot.
STU gave a dominating performance throughout the first five minutes of the first period and already had 5 shots on goal.
Matt MacLeod of the Tommies lost the puck as he tripped and slid a quarter way down the rink giving the puck to the Tigers who skated the puck into the Tommies net zone.
The Tigers shot on goal, but was picked off by goalie Tyson Teichmann as he slid sideways as the puck rebounded off his pads.
The puck found its way back to in the Tigers grip and shot into the Tommies net-zone.
Tommies Jordan Moore gained control of the puck and passed to Harvey who shot on Teichmann who made a glove save.
Tigers received a two minute penalty for ruffing with less than five minutes left in game giving the Tommies a power play.
The period ended tied at zero with 13 shots on goal for STU and 10 for the Tigers.
The crowd was entertained during intermission as a rubber-chicken throw competition on ice took place.
Four children took turns tossing a rubber-chicken on center ice where the puck drops. The one who got closest to center ice won 20 dollars.
The second period started with Tommies Rankyn Campbell face off with Tigers Walsh.
The puck landed in Tigers possession giving them a shot that landed wide of the goal.
Tigers Wes Herrett passed the puck to Jesse Lussier who rapped the puck around the net but was saved by Teichmann bringing the shots on net to 14-12 for STU.
STU decided to pick up their pace by releasing an aggressive arsenal of physicality but still could not score despite the chances on net.
Matt English of the Tigers shot hard on Tommies goalie but passed about six inches wide of the net.
The Tommies received a two minute penalty for interference with 48 seconds left, ending the second period still tied at zero with 22-15 shots on goal for STU.
During intermission two fans were given the opportunity to shoot three pucks from half ice in competition for 20 dollars. The first shooter got one puck in the net and hit the post on the other two. The second shooter got two pucks in the net missing the third, winning him the prize.
The third period was evenly matched between the Tommies and the Tigers with a few penalties and a few shots on goal.
The Tigers received a penalty which almost caused a fight between two opposing players giving the Tigers a second penalty and the Tommies a five on three advantage.
The Tommies had difficulty capitalizing on their advantage and could not score.
The third period still ended with a tie 0-0 with 27-24 shots on goal for STU.
From the tie, a fourth sudden-death period ensued and although plenty of shots on goal happened, there were no goals.
The game then went to a shootout.
STU’s Campagna took the first shot but was saved at goal. DAL AC’s Walsh took the second shot on Teichmann but was also saved. Shane McColgan shot on the Tommies but the puck went wide of the net. The fourth shot by Felix Page met the upper corner of the Tommies net ending the shootout and winning the game 1-0 Tigers.
