Carpool system in the works
Student unions at St. Thomas and University of New Brunswick have joined forces to build a carpooling service for students on both campuses.
The unions are considering sponsoring a paid online service for students to post their ads offering or asking for rides. The service is not only for students heading out of town, but to fill gaps in the Safe Wheels program.
“(Safe Wheels) doesn’t run all day every day,” says STUSU Vice President Education Ella Henry.
“For students who live outside of the area where busses go, or where busses go pretty infrequently, it might be a good alternative to just driving in themselves.”
Henry said the unions paired up to offer all students a wider variety of rides.
She also said she hoped the service will encourage sustainability and environmental awareness on campus.
STU’s student union has passed a motion to go ahead with the service; UNB’s student union will discuss the issue later this month.
