“I’m certainly excited to see us win. I think it really shows STU’s community spirit, that everyone pulled together and we managed to beat Sainte-Anne,” said Ella Henry, STUSU president.
The concert is sponsored by TD Canada Trust, which also held contests in Central and Western Canada.
STU had been high up in the standings for weeks. According to Henry, officials had contacted all the potential winners – including STU – before the contest was over to start working out the logistics of the concert.
Jeffrey Carleton, director of communications at STU, says the win shows off STU’s qualities to the community and incoming students.
“It shows the kind of community we have here,” he said. “We worked with the STUSU to promote the contest but the students came through and they voted online and they followed the contest closely.”
“The timing couldn’t be better for us. Nov. 8 is just after our open house on Saturday, we’ll have a lot of high school students. They’ll see the kind of community we have at St. Thomas.”
Henry says the contest was in STU’s favour because of its small size. Votes were counted in proportion to the school’s student body.
Tickets will be available Nov. 4 from 1-5 p.m. According to the official Facebook group created by Henry, the location will be announced anywhere from 48 hours to 30 minutes before the availability time.
Although tickets are free, priority will be given to those who voted in the contest.
