The St. Thomas University soccer teams walked away without a single goal scored on them in their double-header against the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus Rams on Sept. 22.

The STU women took control of the game early. They were able to set Nikita McCartney up for a clear shot just 10 minutes into the game.

The Tommies kept up the pressure for the rest of the half. They got a penalty kick 30 minutes in, but the Ram’s keeper was able to defend it.

It wasn’t until after the second half that the Tommies finally got another one past the goalkeeper, posting a 2-0 lead after McCartney got her second with a nice finish into the right side of the net.

Fifteen minutes into the second half Louisa Hughes buried a shot from far out after a bad turnover in the Ram’s end, and it wasn’t long before she got her second one toward the end of the game.

The women finished the game strong, walking away with a 4-0 win and without a single shot made on their own net.

Captain and goalkeeper Mary Cronin was very excited about her shutout and her fellow teammate’s success.

“A shut out is always a good feeling, but getting to that point is a full team effort,” said Cronin.

The men’s game began similarly with a quick start, generating lots of chances from their great pressure and taking only 15 minutes to get on the board with a shot from Kyle Yearwood.

As the game went on, the Tommies maintained high pressure but the Ram’s keeper stood his ground, robbing the men of multiple good chances until Nunzio Marceca nailed the second goal of the game.

There were multiple scoring opportunities during the rest of the game, but neither team was able to capitalize — until Yearwood was awarded a penalty kick, bringing the score to 3-0.

The men kept the game in their hands the whole time, also keeping the Ram’s shots to an impressive zero.

Cronin was impressed with her fellow teammates work.

“It was a strong game for our team,” said Cronin.

“[After] trying a new formation we were able to capitalize and get the win.”
