The St. Thomas men’s soccer team made their playoff hopes a lot harder this weekend losing two key games to the UNBSJ Seawolves 2-1 and 1-0 in ACAA soccer action.
The playoffs are now wide open going into the seasons last weekend.
The Tommies are currently 2-3-3 on the season in 5th place with nine points. Four points separates them from the 2nd place Seawolves who are 4-3-1 on the season with 13 points and they are one point back of the 4th and final playoff spot which is held by Kings College.
“We need to go down to Halifax next weekend positive and try to win both games,” said Tommies head coach Darren Cann. “We created a lot of opportunities this weekend, we just need to start finishing and it will be crucial to do that this weekend.”
Mark Thompson opened the scoring on Saturday for the Seawolves from a corner kick that slipped by keeper Marc Gagnon and onto Thompsons head.
“Going into it in the beginning we knew it was going to be a close game,” said Cann. “They needed the points and we needed the points to stretch away a bit. It was a very hard game, very even, and both teams came to play a very hard battle.”
Mackenzie Tamblyn would walk up the left side untouched for 55 yards and buried the ball in the back of the net on Saturday to make it 2-0 Seawolves. Hassen Yussuf scored the lone goal for the Tommies in a losing effort.
“We gave a couple silly goals away,” said Cann. “It cost us.”
The losing would continue for the Tommies on Sunday as Jared Gerow would bury a loose ball from a corner kick to give the Seawolves a 1-0 win and a six point weekend.
The Tommies head to Halifax this weekend to take on Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday and Kings College on Sunday.
