Anthony Bryan is a fourth-year St. Thomas University student majoring in creative writing, and a great STU theatre actor and director. Bryan is from Trinidad and Tobago, and has studied in Fredericton for three years.
The St. Thomas Early English Drama Society production of The Tragical History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus was an unexpected chance for Bryan to get involved in theatre in his second year. Someone had to drop out of the play, and there was a post online to find people who could replace the role with just a few lines. “I should try,” Bryan told himself at that time. After that, they started to give him more roles throughout the rest of the semester.
This year, he is the director of the STEEDS production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
In his third year he was an assistant director and played the role of Guildenstern in Hamlet. As the time goes by, Bryan explores the fun of script writing, making his ideas into plays and letting other people act it out.
“To hear them say it and do a thing only seen in your imagination is such a fun feeling,” Bryan said.
For Bryan, theatre gives people opportunities to do a new thing and find a sense of freedom. To not be “you” for once in a while is a chance to explore your creativity. He likes the idea of stepping into a fictional character’s shoes and portraying that person in his own way or how the author or director wants.
Kid Flash is one of the dream roles for Bryan, a fan of superhero movies. Imagining oneself as a builder of skyscrapers or a superhero defending the planet is empowering to a person.
For his future career, Bryan wants to continue directing and writing. He enjoys being able to direct people and interact with the action of the stories.
