No Olympics on stolen Native land

Greetings readers.

Today I am sitting at my laptop after a walk around town. I hadn’t taken much notice of posters around the city, usually none of them spark my interest, until today. On my walk to the grocery store I noticed a poster that declared, “No Olympics on stolen Native land!” I made a mental note of the website address and continued on my walk.

Not long after noticing the first, I found another, and another.
While I’m hardly a fan of sports, I still had to ask myself, “What’s wrong with Olympic sport competition?”

Luckily enough, that very question was asked in the FAQ section of the site. The answer, “Sports and physical health are a positive aspect of any society. The Olympic industry uses sports and athletes as commodities to market corporate products and services. Governments use Olympic games to unite their populations behind nationalist symbols, to impose greater social control, and to attract corporate investment.”
The group is dedicated to raising awareness on the environmental impact of the Olympics. One of the posters I read on my walk said that black bears are being hit by cars in B.C. in alarming numbers. The mountains are being cleared to make way for one-time-only venues, and with the thinning of the forest, the Aboriginal people of that area lose more and more of their essential plants for traditional medicine.

The mountains are the last bastion of habitat for the animals of our country, we’ll all need to be Olympic runners to escape the mudslide that happens when the roots of trees aren’t there to hold the earth in place as water rushes through it. If we don’t respect our planet, it will wipe the slate clean and no amount of money will convince it otherwise.
