The St. Thomas University International Student Association will be hosting an international cuisine dinner on Nov. 21. This is the first year this event will be held. Proceeds from the dinner will go towards an international student bursary.
Sarah Kam, president of the association and a fourth year students at St. Thomas University says this event will be different than the Food Fest event that’s usually held by the association.
“People will feel like it’s more of a formal (event), so it’s more enticing for people to come down, sit, enjoy a meal,” said Kam.
A full meal course will be served, and the food will be prepared by international students from 10 countries. Canadian food will also be served.
According to Kam raising funds for an international student bursary is important because there aren’t many available at St. Thomas. With tuition and day-to-day costs, Kam believes there is always an international student that could use the help.
“Every year we see that there’s a lot of students who cannot keep up with the cost of daily needs,” she said. “It creates this vicious cycle where (students) stop going to classes because they just have so much stress going on.”
Kam hopes by the end of the year the association can collect enough money to provide two students with a $750 bursary.
Tickets are sold for $10 for graduate and undergraduate students, and $15 for postgraduate students and the general public. The events will be held in the Off-campus Lounge in James Dunn Hall.
The association will be holding more events next semester such as salsa dancing classes and an international student pub crawl, as well as the annual multicultural fair.
“We’re really putting a lot of effort into it,” said Kam, “anybody is welcome.”
