Hopes to rebound from some rough seasons

The St. Thomas Tommies are welcoming new staff and recruits across the board, including a new coach for women’s soccer.

Macky Singh will be the new head coach of the women’s soccer team.

“He’s very knowledgeable and very motivated, so we’re very excited about (Singh) joining our coaching staff,” said Mike Eagles, STU’s athletic director and men’s hockey coach.

Singh comes to STU from New Zealand where he led the women’s team at New Zealand Universities national team to the World University Games three times.

“I am excited to be appointed the STU women’s soccer head coach,” said Singh in a press release. “I look forward to building a solid foundation for the program that will be competitive this season and future seasons.”

The Women’s basketball team added four new players: Renee LeBlanc, Lindsay Whittaker, Kathleen McCann and Keely Briggs. The team won the 2008-2009 ACAA basketball championship, after an exceptional season.

The men’s hockey team added five new forwards to the line up.

Eagles said he thinks the recruits will beef up the team’s offense.

“Men’s hockey struggled a bit last year, but I think we’ve had a… pretty good recruiting year, and we’re looking to improve on last year’s performance.”

The Tommies are excited to have Tyler Dietrich, Matt Eagles, Alex Labonte, Mike Reich and Jordan Scott joining the roster.
