Six laptops and two desktops reported missing since Aug. 23
FREDERICTON (CUP) — Several laptop computers and two desktop computers have been stolen from the University of New Brunswick in several instances.
The first desktop was reported missing from a lab on Aug. 23; another desktop went missing shortly after. Both were secured to the desks with locks.
By Sept. 21, three laptops were reported missing. On Sept. 23, Bruce Rogerson, campus security director, was sending out an email alert warning people not to leave valuables unattended when a fourth laptop was reported stolen.
By the end of the day two more were stolen.
In one instance, a student was in a classroom and left to visit a friend behind a divider. When he returned to his desk his laptop had been swiped.
Rogerson hopes students will assist him and Fredericton police in the investigation by being more aware of their surroundings.
“We can’t be everywhere and it’s not a gated community. We want students to be able to study in a free and safe environment and concentrate on their studies without worrying about their stuff being stolen,” Rogerson said.
“We need them to be more vigilant with how they protect their stuff and at the same time report suspicious activity.”
Rogerson said students should enact a buddy system the same way they should with keeping a close eye on their drink in a bar.
He is hoping to uncover more information about the thefts. However, campus security and Fredericton police have no details on a suspect.
Rogerson said, as with any investigation, this one will rely fully on the engagement of citizens. He is encouraging businesses to notify police if laptops start showing up at local pawn shops.
The thefts have been random and have happened by opportunity. No specific brands are being targeted.
