Students’ Union president Ella Henry has taken exception to the Aquinian’s front page story this week “Choose your STUSU.”
The article cites a campus bookstore, lobbying for lower tuition costs and a possible move toward the more activist Canadian Federation of Students as issues she wants to move ahead on if re-elected. Henry says the move to CFS is not part of her platform.
When asked to clarify her position on STUSU’s association with the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (CASA) and CFS, Henry refused to comment saying she “cannot clarify comments [she] didn’t make.”
On April 8, 2010, Henry returned from a CASA conference with the recommendation that STUSU consider lowering its status to associate member. Henry cited governance and budget issues within the organization as the reason for the review and a two hour debate ensued. STUSU agreed to write a letter to CASA outlining its concerns. The letter was never drafted or sent.
On Nov. 25, 2010, Henry returned from a CASA conference she attended with VP education Craig Mazerolle, who gave an hour long report critical of CASA. Henry has gone on record saying she wants STUSU to review its CASA membership.
