Two teachers and one student are in the hospital with minor and serious injuries after an incident at Eastern College on Prospect Street in Fredericton this morning. A fourth person, a male suspect is also in the hospital.
“On arrival, the police officers found that the three victims had been injured by a long-bladed knife or a machete-style knife,” said Chief of Fredericton Police Force, Leanna Fitch at a press conference today.
Police responded to a call of a disturbance at the college at 8:25 a.m.
The Fredericton police arrested one adult male. It is not confirmed if he is a student or not. Police could not reveal the name of the suspect at this time. After he is out of hospital care, the police will be able to confirm information about the suspect once he is in custody.
“When the police arrived on the scene, the male was being detained on the floor in the hallway. He was identified by the people at the scene as being the suspect,” she said.
The incident occurred in one of the academic buildings. Witnesses are being questioned. The area is being closed off and classes are cancelled for the day.
“We want to make note of a student specifically, whose name is not released at this time, whose intervention was critical to ensure that a bad situation was not made worse than it was,” said Fitch.
Fitch said this was an isolated incident at Eastern College and they do not believe there will be any additional threats to the community.
“The matter does remain under investigation. It’s still early as you can appreciate in any investigation where the primary response team officers and our major crime scene detectives are working diligently on this file,” said Fitch.
More to come.
