All the dos and don’ts for back to school fashion from Emma Chapple

Typically, New Year’s resolutions are made at the start of the calendar year but this never made sense to me. What is so different about the first of January? If you ask me, September is the time for a New Year’s resolution.

With the start of a new school year comes the perfect time to re-invent yourself. Think about it for a second. You haven’t seen your classmates for four months, when is there a better time to get a dramatic new haircut or to experiment with your clothing?

So, are you looking to make a fashion resolution? Luckily, there are plenty of fall fashions to choose from.

The cozy sweater that was a fledgling trend last year has stepped it up a notch for 2013. Perfect for both early morning classes and afternoons in Starbucks, this year’s crop of cozies is all about the patterns. From elegant florals to rough and tumble camo prints, there’s a match for every girl this year. For maximum style and comfort, buy a sweater that’s one size up from your normal fit.

Leather and lace are usually at odds together, but this year is an exception. Lace is making a big comeback. But rest assured, it’s not your great-grandmother’s lace. These looks are perfectly suited for the 21st century, with lace dresses in bright pops of colour. Think turquoise, magenta and coral.

What else is trending once again? The leather ankle bootie. It’s true that ankle boots can sometimes be unflattering (especially to those of us who aren’t blessed with Gisele Bundchen’s legs). However, there’s a bevy of boots available this year. With new cuts and heights, ankle boots have more variety than ever. Pairing a leather bootie with a lace dress strikes the perfect balance between edgy and feminine. Take it a step further with a cropped leather jacket.

The summer music festivals have come and gone, but that doesn’t mean you can’t rock the look on campus. A simple pair of boyfriend jeans can make any look casual and cool. Graphic tees have gotten even louder with big slogans and colourful tribal prints. Swap the flip-flops for a pair of combat boots to take the look into the colder climate.

This season is all about great comebacks, and the same rings true for menswear. The emo-punk look of days gone by has once again given way to a preppier style. Yes, it’s cool to wear a varsity jacket again. Even if you’re not a student athlete, bomber jackets are popping up in pleather, suede and classic knit fabrics. No school colours necessary.

Dust off the Timberlands, it’s hiking season. Next time you feel like throwing on your sneakers, think twice. The outward-bound standby is the latest trend in men’s footwear. This time, hiking boots are being paired with everything, from skinny jeans to suits. Here is a true marriage of fashion and function. A good sturdy pair of hiking boots is ideal for Fredericton’s fall weather. Keep it classic with camel, or make a statement with a shiny black pair.
