The St. Thomas University men’s volleyball team won the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association championship finals after beating the University of New Brunswick Saint John Seawolves three sets to two on Sunday.
The Tommies secured their championship spot after beating the Holland College Hurricanes Saturday. The first set was evenly matched but the Tommies were able to win after closing the set 26-24.
The Tommies dominated the second set 25-12 after a number of service and hitting errors by the Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes came back in the third set but couldn’t overpower the Tommies. The set ended 27-25 for STU, ending the game and sending the Tommies to the finals.
The Tommies women’s volleyball team made it to the semifinals after defeating the University of King’s College Blue Devils 3-1 during quarter finals Friday in Saint John.
Set scores were 24-26, 25-14, 25-14, and 28-26.
The following day the Tommies fell 3-0 to the Holland College Hurricanes in the semifinals.
The Tommies came out sluggish in the first set loosing 25-15 due to a number of unforced errors.
They improved slightly in the second set but struggled defensively losing 25-19.
With the third set looking bleak, the Tommies gained a footing but the Hurricanes maintained an edge on the Tommies and won the third set 26-24 and game 3-0 Hurricanes.
The men’s volleyball teams heads to nationals March 9-12.
