The St. Thomas University women’s volleyball team will have to settle for second best.
The number two-ranked women lost the Atlantic Colleges Athletic Association championship game against number-one ranked Mount St. Vincent University on Sunday afternoon in the Lady Beaverbrook Gym.
As the host team of the tournament, the lower bleachers of the gym were packed with people in STU colours. On the other side, MSVU fans, who made the trip from Halifax, were equally loud.
STU lost the first set 25-12, but came back to play a closer game in the second set, losing 25-21.
In the third set, the Tommies called a timeout when MSVU was one point away from the championship, with the score set at 24-21 for MSVU.
The STU fans rose from their seats and cheered on the host team, but the cheering wasn’t enough. The Tommies lost the final set 25-21.
It’s MSVU’s second championship in three seasons.
STU beat Mount Allison University, last season’s champions, on Saturday to advance to the final.
Only eight days before the championship game, STU beat MSVU in its own gym, three sets to one.
