Volleyball player Bourgeois reflects on his success

For Michael Bourgeois, volleyball is his one true passion – despite having played many different sports his whole life.

The first-year St. Thomas University student is a recent addition to the university’s men’s volleyball line-up

“Volleyball has always been my strong front, also it’s my favourite sport,” said Bourgeois.

“I started in Grade 8 with a team, my first year playing, and ever since then I’ve just been pushing myself to get better and better.”

Bourgeois says not only has it been hard to balance both his school life and sports life, but the transition from high school volleyball to university-level volleyball is a noticeable change as well.

“The caliber has definitely changed, there’s lots of intense volleyball. More intense practicing, not only on the court but off the court as well, gym sessions and cardio sessions, eating healthy and living the lifestyle to best perform at the sport,” said Bourgeois.

With early morning practices, a day full of school, and then late-night practices, cardio workouts, and gym time, Bourgeois has a very hectic schedule.

“If you are able to manage your life well, and you are able to put this in your schedule and maintain your schedule, it’s no challenge in that sense if you put your mind to it,” said Bourgeois.

“It’s something I love so I have no problem doing it.”

Having a lower standing as a first year player, and a low standing at the university, Bourgeois said he’s found a way to gain experience and any organization comes with a bit of hassle.

“I seem to excel more in that sport than other, it’s something I really enjoy doing and I just push myself to be good enough to perform at this level in university,” said Bourgeois
