UNB classical concert series aims to boost student audience

The University of New Brunswick will welcome the Canadian Guitar Quartet on Thursday as part of its Music on the Hill concert series.

Sheryl Pepin, the adminstrator of UNB’s Centre for Musical Arts, said student turnout for the series has been low since this year’s first show on Sept. 14. The series’ goal this year is to promote the concerts to a younger demographic.

Pepin said the population of classical music enthusiasts is aging, so they’re making more of an effort to reach out to students.

“The ticket price is $10 which is pretty reasonable for an evening concert,” Pepin said. “We’re trying to get the word out that these concerts are available. It’s convenient – it’s right here on campus – and we also have free noon-hour concerts so people can just stop by and take [one in].”

This is UNB’s 54th year of the Music on the Hill series. Concerts on campus were originally provided by a group called the Creative Arts Committee to offer a variety of music to students, faculty and the general public.

When UNB established the Centre for Musical Arts, the two groups joined forces and the Creative Arts Committee grew into the Music on the Hill committee. The goal of Music on the Hill was – and still is – to offer a wide spectrum of musical performances that are unlike anything else offered in the city.

Pepin said the committee tries to pick Canadian acts and most of them are within the Atlantic provinces.

“It’s not just your traditional classical music,” she said. “There’s some different stuff as well – it’s quite a different range.”

The Canadian Guitar Quartet will perform Thursday at Memorial Hall on UNB campus. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and is $10 for students, $25 for adults and $22 for seniors.
