Suave sips and poker chips

Justin Brown is using his job as student life assistant to bring students together with a pre-formal event. The event will include a poker tournament where two students from each resident will compete to win a Wii for their residence.

There will also be virgin drinks, music, fine art.

The event is called “suave sips and poker chips.” The virgin drinks will be virgin jello shots, wake up call shots, virgin mudslides, and virgin champagne. It will be catered by Aramark but served by eight STU students.

“Instead of waiting in line and wasting your time waiting for someone to mix your drink it’s going to be more VIP feel where you can go and hang out with your friends, look at some fine art, listen to music, maybe dance a little bit, and I’ll have attractive people come and serve the drinks.”

Brown says the event will cost $500 at the most. He has been planning it for a few months. The event is free. Jon Munn will be the MC for the event.

“I’m trying to make it a sober event that feels like a drinking event.”

Brown hopes by having the event a few hours before formal will entice students to come out. There will be a Trius bus going from the event to the Winter Formal at the Crowne Plaza.

“If you don’t have a way for students to go from my event to the event I’m attached to then you might as well not even have it.”

Brown is also an off-campus representative for the students’ union and hopes his two roles will make it easier for him to plan events.

The pre-formal event will go from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in James Dunn Hall on Dec. 4.

The theme of the formal is Mad Men. Entry is $5 with a STU ID and a non-perishable food item, $6 without a food item, and $10 for a non-STU guest. It goes from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. and a bus will take students back to the Forest Hill residences and campus at 11:30 p.m.
