Amy Sheppard and Brad Sears were chosen as the St. Thomas Tommies Coors Light Athletes of the Week for the week of Sept. 19 to 26.
Sheppard is a fourth-year women’s soccer player, while Sears is a fourth-year player on the men’s rugby team.
A news release from the STU athletics department said Sheppard calls Scotchtown, N.S. home and played a solid two games for the Tommies women’s soccer squad on Sept. 17 and 18 at Scotiabank Park South.
The release said Sheppard, who normally plays wing back, recently moved from the Tommies’ defense to the midfield, moved the ball well and helped create much of the team’s offense in STU’s 3-1 win over the Crandall Chargers Sept. 17 and 2-2 tie against the University of New Brunswick Saint John Seawolves the next day.
The news release said Sears comes from Lincoln – outside Fredericton – and played a key role in the Tommies men’s rugby team’s 29-14 victory over the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers on Sept. 18 at Scotiabank Park South.
The release said Sears recorded a big tackle on UPEI’s eight-man unit, was a defensive force throughout the contest, provided breakdown support and notched a try.

STU athlete recognized by ACAA

Sheppard was also named the Female Athlete of the Week by the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association for the week of Sept. 20.
Sheppard was recognized by the ACAA for the same reasons as she was commended by the STU athletics department.
The ACAA Male Athlete of the Week was third-year striker Ibra Sanoh of the juggernaut Holland College Hurricanes, who scored four goals in two games for the Hurricanes on Sept. 17 and 18.
