Tommies Notebook: Saluting Apperson, Speller

St. Thomas University women’s hockey captain Kelty Apperson and men’s basketball player Jeremy Speller were the Tommies Coors Light Athletes of the Week for Nov. 14.

A fifth-year forward from Kingston, Ont., Apperson scored twice and added a pair of assists, along with 13 shots on goal, in the Tommies’ 5-3 road win over the St. Francis Xavier University X-Women on Nov. 12.

Apperson also recorded five shots in the Tommies’ 1-0 loss against the Saint Mary’s University Huskies on Nov. 13 in Halifax. The defeat marked the first time STU has fallen in regulation time this season.

In 10 games played as of last Friday, Apperson has five goals and nine assists for a total of 14 points.

Speller, a fourth-year forward from Gesgapegiag, Que., notched 16 points and 13 rebounds in the Tommies’ first victory of the season – a 72-69 overtime win against the Dalhousie Agricultural College Rams on Nov. 12.

Speller has averaged 11.3 points per game in the Tommies’ four contests this season.

Ring, Robar commended

Women’s hockey forward Danielle Ring and men’s rugby front row Justin Robar were the Tommies Coors Light Athletes of the Week for Nov. 7.

Ring, a second-year player from Saint John, N.B., was part of the power play unit that scored three goals in the Tommies’ game against the Dalhousie University Tigers on Nov. 5 at home.

STU rallied to overcome an early 3-0 deficit with four unanswered goals in that match that gave the Tommies a 4-3 win.

Ring netted one of the three power play goals scored by the Tommies in the comeback effort.

Robar, a fourth-year from Geary, N.B., helped tighten the Tommies’ scrum and provided hard running and heavy hitting in the Rugby New Brunswick Maritime University ‘A’ championship Nov. 5 at College Field.

The contest was won 42-17 by the University of New Brunswick Ironmen.

Tommies teams nationally ranked

Three of the Tommies sports teams have been getting some national attention lately.

The highest ranked squad is women’s hockey, which has held onto third place in the U Sports Top 10 national rankings for the last two weeks, while SMU has been ranked second throughout the last month.

Both the STU men’s volleyball team and women’s basketball team were 10th in their respective Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Top 15 standings as of Tuesday, Nov. 15.
