The St. Thomas University men’s hockey team played an action-packed game against the St. Mary’s Huskies at the Grant Harvey Centre Jan. 16.

Despite Tommie’s motivation, their push to end a seven game losing streak proved unsuccessful with a 6-3 loss.

The Tommie’s started the first period strong with a flurry of energy throughout the game. However, Huskie’s defensemen, Stephen Gillard scored the first goal with an assist from forwards Steven Beyers and Ben Duffy with 1:16 left in the game.

The Tommie’s managed to push through and tie the game by right wing Matt MacLeod halfway through the first period. Soon after, Huskie’s forward Steven Beyers managed to score a second goal with 8:14 left in the first period giving Huskies the lead. The first period ended with 11-7 shots on goal for the Huskies.

The second period started with the Tommies increasing their aggressiveness for an exciting second period as fans cheered on.

However, 5:13 into the period a penalty was called against the Tommies for ruffing. Soon after, the Huskies’ Gillard was also placed in the penalty box for a high sticking offence. Two, two-minute penalties before the halfway mark made for an interesting beginning to the second period—and the excitement didn’t end there.

As shots on goal increased for the Tommies, their fans cheered during each shot attempt.

STU received another penalty for high-sticking by Jordan Moore getting him four minutes in the penalty box.

During Huskie’s power play, Kyle Pereira scored with less than four minutes left in the second period bringing the score 3-1.

The period ended with shots on goal 27-19 for Huskies.

Heading into the third period, Huskie’s forward Mitchell Menard scored with 36 seconds in bringing it 4-1. The Tommie’s continued to play hard despite the goal.

Shortly after the goal, Huskie’s Gillard received another penalty.

Tommie’s defensemen Spencer MacDonald scored the Tommie’s first power play goal of the season with an assist from defensemen, Brendan Childerley. 30 seconds later, the Tommies scored another goal making the score 4-3 for the Huskies.

After STU was given a penalty for hooking, the Huskie’s slipped another goal into the net, bringing the score 5-3. With two minutes left in the game, the Tommies pulled their goalie for the six man advantage. However, this proved unsuccessful when the Huskies shot into an open net with over 30 seconds left in the game, finalizing the score 6-3 for St. Mary’s.

So far, St. Thomas’s men’s hockey team ranks last in the standings with only one win and 17 loses this season.
