St. Thomas University men’s hockey team beat the St. Mary’s University Huskies 2-1 during a five-period overtime shootout at the Grant Harvey Centre Nov. 20.

The puck dropped at 7:00 p.m. between Tommies Jason Cameron and Huskies Steven Shipley who took advantage of the puck bringing it into Huskie possession.

SMU were able to bring the puck into STU’s net area where Marc-Andre Levesque got shouldered hard into the boards behind the net by a Huskie.

Anthony Latina gained control of the puck and skated it back to Huskies territory on a breakaway, shooting the puck between the legs Huskies goalie Cole Cheveldave scoring a point for STU with only 1:30 into the first period.

Tommies Brendan Childerley lost the face-off against Taylor Burke and shortly after the Tommies received a two minute penalty for high sticking.

Huskies Steven Beyers took advantage of the five-on-four power play by shooting the puck but missed the net.

Bradley Greene also tried to capitalize on the power play with a breakaway but was robbed by one of the Tommies defencemen.

SMU regained possession of the puck and scored tying the game 1-1.

With 12:08 left in the first period Huskies Matt Tipoff landed two solid consecutive shots on goalie Tyson Teichmann who eventually was able to grab the puck in his glove.

Tommies Matt MacLeod returned with a breakaway and shot on Huskies goalie Cole Cheveldave who also made a glove save.

Both STU and SMU were confronted with penalties throughout the entire first period.

STU’s Bryce Milson made the final shot bringing shots on goal 5-14 for the Huskies. The first period ended tied at 1-1.

Intermission was hosted by STU Athletics who had a chicken toss challenge in center ice.

The second period started with Cameron and Shipley facing off. STU gained possession of the puck but a two minute penalty was called on MacLeod for unsportsmanlike conduct giving SMU a one man advantage.

Huskies Stephen MacAulay took advantage and slammed a heavy shot into Teichmann’s chest who saved the play. Justin Weller got a second shot but the puck went wide of the net. Steven Beyers got into the action with a slap shot from the blue line but could not capitalize on the power play.

After the Huskies one man advantage Tommies Shane McColgan got his stick on the puck and passed it to Latina who then passed it to JC Campagne who shot on Cheveldave who stopped the play.

STU began showing dominance in the second half of the second period with lots of heavy hits, accurate passing and puck control despite their few shots on goal. Their offence grew stronger but they had difficulty getting the puck in the net.

The penalties began to rack up again against STU and SMU as MacLeod received 2:00 for unsportsmanlike conduct. Huskies Justin Weller received 2:00 for checking from behind. Burke got 2:00 for cross checking as SMU’s Anthony Repaci got 2:00 for checking from behind.

Jordan Moore brought down Huskies Francis Menard hard and received 2:00 minutes in the penalty box at 4:08 left in period.

The Huskies dominated puck possession and got multiple shots on goal but were all saved by Teichmann.

After the power play the Huskies doubled the Tommies shots on goal 22-11.

Tommies Connor Sanvido raced down the ice to be met by a Huskie who tried to rob the puck but Sanvido was able to shoot a solid shot on goal but was saved by Cheveldave.

After repeated shots by Stephen MacAulay on Teichman, Huskies Austyn Hardie received a penalty causing him to jump up and down in a fit. As the referees tried to calm him he turned around and tried to get his gloves on a Tommie who Hardie felt responsible for his penalty. Hardie was sent to the penalty box.

The second period ended tied 1-1 with 1:44 still left in Hardie’s penalty. STU had 12 shots on goal and SMU had double at 24.

In the third period faceoff both STU and SMU changed their players to Tommies Shane McColgan and Huskies Burke. McColgan was able to get the puck to Campagna to start the battle.

Both Tommies and Huskies each recieved a penalty with 17:30 left in the period leaving it four-on-four.

McColgan was hit by a Huskie injuring McColgan’s arm. He skated back to the bench to be examined but later returned to the game.

During a 2:00 power play for STU the Tommies could not find a pocket in the net to sink the puck. Tommies goalie’s frustration could be seen as the power play expired and he slammed his stick on the ice in an attempt to entice his teams scoring capability.

A few more penalties were given to both teams an STU finally looked to have the ability to capitalize on a 2:00 minute penalty for tripping by Huskies Stephen Gillard.

The third period ended with the score still tied 1-1. Tommies shots on goal increased 18-29 for the Huskies, and the game went into sudden-death overtime.

The 10 minute overtime period was four-on-four but because SMU still had time left in their penalty the period started four-on-three with STU having the advantage.

The period ended scoreless despite the Tommies increase in shots-on-goal.

The game went into a shootout and the Star Wars Death March Song was played enticing the crowd as the zambonies cleared the middle of the rink, length-wise.

Tommies Latina was the first to shoot and scored a goal in between the pads of Cheveldale.

The last five shots of the shootout were either saved or missed the net.

The game ended 2-1 for the Tommies with 30-22 shots on goal for the Huskies.
