STU Dines: The Cedar Tree Cafe

The Cedar Tree Cafe, 418 Queen St.

Have you ever wanted more food options than what’s available on campus? I’ve spent three years here at St. Thomas, but find there isn’t much of a variety when it comes to the cafeteria’s menu. My job now, as someone who works in the downtown restaurant scene, is to show you what you’re missing. It’s time students had educated ideas of what restaurant options Fredericton provides.

What it’s like: From the moment I walked in the door, you could hear – and smell – the atmosphere change from the busy noise of the street. Local jazz and blues music played from a surround sound system and the aroma of espresso and cookies filled the room. There’s also an on-going art display of three or four different artists that changes monthly.

How it tasted: The food is Lebanese-style and offers a great selection of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free dishes. For those of you upset over variety in the vegetarian items at the caf, this is the place for you. I suggest ordering the Mezza starter, which gives you an assortment of dishes.

How I was treated: As soon as I walked in the door I recognized fellow students, and half of the servers were students as well. I was never ignored, and when I asked for service, I was given some background on the restaurant with a smile.

How much? Money is tight these days, but you won’t see a dish over $12. It’s perfect for a lunch meet-and-greet. Just remember to always tip your bartender!
