STU comes together to help Japan

Students form relief group to raise money for victims in Japan

Michelle Twomney was driving down to Massachusetts with her boyfriend Michael Manning during March break when they heard about the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

After hearing the news, Manning decided the St. Thomas community should do something to assist those in Japan and the students at STU who were affected. Students for Relief was founded that day.

Co-founder Twomney says the ultimate goal of the group is to raise as much money as it can in order to help.

“I’m so happy with the amount of donations and willingness of the school and greater community to participate in our fundraising efforts.”

The group has raised $400 so far. Currently there are spare change jars in the James Dunn and George Martin cafeterias for the relief effort. The group plans to host events throughout the remainder of the school year to raise money. The next event will be a silent auction in James Dunn Hall on Tuesday March 22nd there will be over 20 items for sale. A concert at Dolans Pub will be held after the auction, entrance is $5.

All of the proceeds earned from the relief effort will be given directly to the Canadian Red Cross.
