Role playing games have an artistic side

RPGThe Adventurer’s Guild is a new society at St. Thomas, where students learn the art of tabletop role playing games.

Alex Corbett, the Guild Master or president of the society says the society allows its members to learn the game and get creative.

“If you’ve ever felt a connection with a story, you can play Dungeons & Dragons, you can play a role playing game,” Corbett said.

An RPG is a tabletop board game, except you create the characters, story and equipment. The genres of these tabletop RPGs can be anything from horror, space, the Old West or high fantasy. All you need is a pencil, paper and a set of dice.

The society promises new events this year for both experienced and inexperienced players. The focus is making the art of tabletop role-playing alive again.

“We want to get as many people into it as we can. It’s a game we love. We can get you the appropriate materials to play that might be too expensive for one person,” Corbett said.

Not only is creating the stories important, but so are the characters and the world players create.

“You’re playing someone who isn’t you. You have to think outside the box,” said Brandon Flynn, the Guild’s archivist.

Flynn thinks it’s important for students involved in English studies or enjoy writing to try playing a role-playing game.

“I think it’s very unique storytelling. I think it really sharpens the mind to new possibilities of writing and how to interact with your audience. It’s a great activity to flex your creative muscles.”

The Guild promises to have more upcoming events and even collaborations with other STU societies.

“We’re super excited. We are here for people who have never tried this. If you’re worried about not knowing how it works, we want to show you how, ” said Corbett.
