The St. Thomas University men’s rugby team can play the last two games of their season after passing a remedial session last week.
The session, which concluded Thursday, involved presentations given by team members in front of athletic director, Mike Eagles, and vice president of finance and administration, Lily Fraser.
“Mike and Lily were both satisfied that the team had taken responsibility for their actions, that they had learned from the mistakes, and that they have committed themselves to behaving better in the future,” director of communications, Jeffrey Carleton said.
The remedial session and presentations were decided after the team was given a one game suspension, due to underage drinking that took place at the home of team captain, Alex Labelle, three weeks ago.
The presentations involved veteran players taking responsibility for the party and acknowledging it was a poor decision and against the code of conduct. The underage and rookie players then presented their perspective on the party and what happened.
Labelle says the team is thankful to be playing their final two games.
“Fortunately the administration understood the situation and realized we regretted our actions and ruled that one game was sufficient punishment,” Labelle said.
“It is definitely good to be able to put this behind us and move forward with our season and the development of our young players.”
Aaron Smith, a member of the rugby team and the 2010-2011 men’s volleyball team who were suspended following the death of Andrew Bartlett, said while the one game suspension was the right decision, it feels good to be able to finish their season.
The team will play their final game of the season on Friday against Mount Allison University.
