Hats off to professionalism

It’s time to address a serious problem here on campus. As much as I wish it weren’t so, there is a serious crime of fashion taking place.

Ladies and gentlemen, it is time you learned that flannel pants are for sleeping. Not for going to class. I cringe whenever I see it. Pajama pants tucked into a pair of Ugg boots, or more often than not, knockoff Uggs.

Personal tastes aside, this is an important question. Should St. Thomas University have a dress code?

It’s true, we are here to learn and prepare for life in the professional world. But does this mean that our look should reflect a certain degree of professionalism?

The notion isn’t exactly out of the ordinary, either. There are post-secondary institutions that enforce standards of dress for students. But, most of these are of the American conservative Christian variety.

As extreme as it may sound, I can definitely see the case for it. There’s a time and a place for everything.

I understand that everybody has off days, this girl included, but if you show up to class 95 per cent of the time looking like you literally just got out of bed… well, an intervention might be in order.

Need more proof? Let’s go to the age old problem of the hat. Since the beginning of our schooling, we – and by “we”, I mean you boys – have been told time and time again to remove our headwear while in class.

We’ve all heard the reasons. It’s respectful, hats distract from the learning environment, and the list goes on. Yet, now as university students, I’m shocked to see how many guys leave their baseball caps on.

I guess thirteen years of constant reminders still hasn’t set in.

As far as professional dress goes, showing your underwear definitely qualifies as a no-no. Girls and guys alike are repeat offenders and most people think nothing of it.

But just take a minute to really think about it. Imagine showing up to teach a class, attending a meeting, or sitting down for an interview and your unmentionables were on parade for the room to see.

It just looks sloppy. I don’t know if I can trust somebody who doesn’t even know how to put their pants on.

And finally, a little lesson for the ladies. From Monday to Friday, you are on campus to take notes and hand in assignments. With that in mind, let’s keep it a little more conservative please.

On Saturday night, you can dress trashy to your heart’s content.

When I see a girl waiting for the morning bus in a miniskirt, I don’t think she looks stylish, I think she looks cold.

I mean seriously, it’s minus three out there. Are you sure you don’t want my parka?

Taking care in the way you dress goes a long way. As much as we’re told otherwise, looks are everything in our society.

The way you look determines what people think of you. Tell me you haven’t judged somebody on their appearance before, I dare you.

What your fellow students, your professors, your employers think of you is at least partly based on your appearance.
Remember, you only get one chance at a first impression.
