Grant Harvey malfunction concerns STU hockey

The breakdown of one of the two ice plants at the Grant Harvey Centre has STU hockey teams worried about the new facility.

The ice plant, responsible for creating the frozen surface for one of the arenas, malfunctioned in July. It is now being repaired, but raises questions about the $15 million building.

Athletics director Mike Eagles said STU had a hockey school scheduled at the Grant Harvey in July, but was going to cancel it anyway because of Troy Ryan’s resignation. He said he wasn’t made aware of the situation until after the ice was lost.

“The school wasn’t involved with the problem at all,” Eagles said.

With the one-year-old building already needing repairs, the school now has to consider alternate plans in case a malfunction happens mid-season.

“There’s always a backup. The first thing we would do would be to move over to the Willie O’Ree. The city has been great to deal with because they understand the necessity,” said Eagles.

“The show must go on with our events.”

An attempt was made to contact Fredericton’s Recreation Facilities Clerk. No comment was made regarding the Grant Harvey’s ice plant malfunction or repairs.
