Cameron Crain goes under a different name in Fredericton: Captain III.

He’s been rapping in the Fredericton music scene since 2011 with his roots in punk rock, which evolved into rap. Captain III  releases his debut LP titled TWIN on Sept. 19.

He believes this LP will set himself apart from other rappers due to the unique musical sampling and rhythms of the album.

“You’ll see when you hear it,” Crain said. He describes the album as “vibrant, feel good and classic.”

He gets his name after a mythology about Captain II, a pilot who saved lives with his famous biplane ‘Twin’. The Captain III alias is meant to be the reincarnation of this pilot and serve as the basis for Captain III’s musical creations.

The album will be the follow-up to his 2003 concept album The Outlands.

“I tried to make this one more personal. I feel people find it hard for people to connect to things that are abstract.”

With rhythmical influences from the likes of Kanye West and lyrical influences from MF Doom, Captain III hopes to bring a new type of rap album to the table. He believes the most important part is simply picking the right words.

Though he grew up in Woodstock, Crain mentions that moving out west for work definitely had an impact on how this album turned out.

“When I was working I’d write rhymes, whenever I’d get home.”

After this release, Captain III plans to follow up with another EP and turn his full time music effort into a full time music career.

“I used to be a delivery driver. I want to do this for a living, get signed to a good indie label.”

Captain III’s new album TWIN comes out Sept. 19th. You can catch Captain III live at the Capital Complex Sept. 25 with StephenHero, Mook – T, and Capt. III’s full band The Beast With Two Backs. Cover is $5 and the show starts at 10:30 p.m.
