Emerging Moon exhibit shows aboriginal roots

“Emerging Moon is the idea that we are all young artists that are essentially emerging in the community,” said Meagan Fanjoy, curator of the exhibit and a featured artist. “For many of us it is our first exhibit.”

Both the exhibit and Fanjoy are sponsored by the New Brunswick Aboriginal Peoples Council. The Emerging Moon exhibit features multiple mediums ranging from ink, watercolour and acrylic painting to mason carvings and photography.

A Fredericton native, Fanjoy is currently attending her fourth year in the bachelor of applied arts program at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design.  She said the things around her including animals, water and botanicals inspire her.

“My preferred medium is usually a mixed media,” said Fanjoy. “I love to work with ink, something that glides freely to create precise lines and intricate detailing.”

All eight of the artists featured in the exhibit are in their twenties, which allows the public to imagesee that there are plenty of young, local and talented artists on the cusp of the art scene.

“I wanted to make sure there would be a mixture of different pieces, so I asked artists that I knew would create some amazing things.”

So far, Fanjoy said the feedback from the exhibit has been positive and she is excited to share her work for another month.

“I am pleasantly surprised about the feedback on the exhibit so far,” says Fanjoy. “It’s amazing to see how many people are interested. I am honored that I was able to have this chance to showcase my work.”

Emerging Moon began on Aug. 28 and will end on Oct. 23. The exhibit can be viewed at the Glencross Gallery at Charlotte Street Arts Centre, 732 Charlotte Street, seven days a week until 10 p.m.
