Underwear and socks
Make finding the right foundation for your outfits less of a scavenger hunt with some colourful and nice organizing boxes that can be found at Walmart or a dollar store for less than $5. These organizing boxes come in a range of styles, colours and materials that allow you to take a simple, functional item and make it something personal you’re happy to have in plain sight of your room. They take up relatively little space and can store loads of things. They are really easy to pull out as most boxes have handles on both sides. This means you won’t have to disorganize drawers every time you’re fishing for a specific garment. They’ll keep your underwear and socks from co-mingling. Some boxes even come with dividers. You can store colourful socks in one side and plain black on the other side, for example. Or make one side just for tights and the other side for socks.
Hangers
I have a ton of hangers in my closet, but I always have the feeling they could do more. Double your closet space instantly by using soda can tabs to hook hangers together. Those little taps on soda cans are relatively useless, unless you put them to use in your closet. They are the perfect size for making an extended hanger. Just slip one over a metal hanger and then use the hole in the tab to add another hanger. You can hang twice as many hangers in one space.
Another super hack is making your own non-slip hangers. Almost every time I can’t find something in my closet it’s because what I’m looking for is somewhere on the floor. To avoid this, just use pipe cleaners to hold slippery clothes in place. Curl a pipe cleaner onto each end of your hanger. Rubber bands work really well too but pipe cleaners are nicer since you can choose different colours.
Scarves
Hangers and shower curtain hooks make the perfect solution for storing and organizing scarves. If you have room in your closet, you can add hooks to a hanger and then add your scarves. If you don’t have space, buy a metal hanger that you can attach to the top of your closet of bedroom door. This is a great way to keep your scarves from knotting and to keep them in view so that you can easily find the one you are looking for.
Another way to keep your scarves organized and easy to reach are plastic boxes or jewelry organizers. Just add the boxes to your drawers and then choose the items to go inside. This is also a great way to organize belts. Just roll them up and stick them in the boxes to keep them out of the way.
Shoes
There are many ways in which you can do your own shoe rack for your closet. One way is to assemble PVC pipe cubbies. The biggest challenge you may face in completing this project is persuading the supply store to cut the pieces. Otherwise, it’s only a matter of glue.
Another simple hack is to just store your shoes in a wine box under your bed. Not everyone considers that space valuable, yet it can do wonders for you. If you don’t like to complicate yourself there’s always the shoe rack option you can find at any department store where the cheapest option will be just under $15.
