CASA report delayed

Have you seen the missing CASA report?

The St. Thomas University students’ union hasn’t.

The report, examining STUSU membership in the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations, was supposed to be presented to council last week.

    It wasn’t.

There was confusion before the regular Thursday STUSU meeting started about the status of the report.

At least one member of the committee tasked with writing the report said she missed the last committee meeting.

On Feb. 16, a motion passed creating the ad hoc committee with a March 15 deadline for returning the report to council.

Committee chairman Hassen Mohamed was also missing from the meeting.

STUSU president Mark Livingstone said Mohamed made wrestling nationals and couldn’t finish the report in time.

Vice-president education Craig Mazerolle and Livingstone also missed the meeting because they were attending a CASA conference in Halifax.

Livingstone wanted the report to give more balance to the ongoing CASA membership review.

For nearly three years, council has been divided along ideological grounds over membership in CASA.

Some members are pushing to move to associate membership. That means losing voting rights, which would be the first step in leaving the organization.

STUSU has until the end of the month to hold a vote to become an associate member.
