The Beaverbrook Art Gallery will receive $1.5 million of government money for renovations, Minister of State for ACOA Keith Ashfield said Thursday morning.

The announcement comes as the gallery celebrates its 50 anniversary.

The money will go toward adding three new spaces, one of which will house the gallery’s permanent collection.

The funds come from $540 million provided to the Canadian Cultural Spaces Fund. As part of the Department of Canadian Heritage, the money is designed to improve galleries and other performing arts venues.

Phase one of the renovations is already underway.

“Our mission is to bring art to our community,” said gallery CEO Bernie Riordon. “Now we have a chance to revitalize the gallery.”
